Attendance Procedures

We have new attendance Codes!

Students Arriving Late (Tardy)

  • A note is needed to verify/excuse your child’s tardy. If your child is tardy due to an appointment, a doctor’s or dentist’s note is required.

  • A parent/guardian may call attendance office to verify/excuse tardy, but it must be within 2 days.

  • Early morning messages take time to process. Your child should sign in as unexcused and their absence will be excused when the call is retrieved.

  • An unexcused tardy of 20 minutes or more is considered unexcused absence.

Checking Students Out Early

  • Send your child to school with a note for early release.

  • Your child must bring note to attendance office before school starts to receive a dismissal pass.

  • Your child must sign out at the appropriate time from the Attendance Office.

    • Failure to sign out will result in an unexcused absence.

  • Call in requests for dismissal are not recommended and will be handled on a time available basis. However, call the subschool, NOT your child!

  • Must be verified/excused by the parent/guardian.

  • A Note must be brought in within 2 days for the absence to be excused.

    • You can also call 703-715-4545 within 2 days for the absence to be excused.

Please be specific about the reason why your child will not be attending school today. In stating the "Reason for Absence/Late Arrival", indicate whether your child has any of the following symptoms:

  • Truancy is against state law. Per FCPS Regulation 2234, the school is required to submit an attendance referral to the Fairfax County Truancy officer whenever a student accrues 5 Unexcused absences.

  • Excessive absences, per FCPS Regulation 2234: five (5) consecutive or twelve (12) cumulative absences (excused and/or unexcused).

  • Medical documentation for absences will be required at this time.

Academy Students

Academy students please check in with your Subschool Office if you do not attend your Academy class on any given day. Some examples of reasons you might not attend Academy are testing, a two-hour delayed opening, altered bell schedule, etc. Please make sure you follow the rules of the Academy that you attend as well. For example, Falls Church Academy requires students to turn in a pre-arranged absence form 24 hours before the absence.

If you have any questions please contact your subschool assistant.
