South Lakes High biology students have developed Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) in their biochemistry unit as part of their project-based learning initiative. The students have been learning about macromolecules and why they are important in the human body, where and why severe acute malnutrition is a problem, and how nutrition affects the body. To help solve the malnutrition problem, the students developed a RUTF product that could be used to save lives in parts of the world where hunger is most acute. Their food is an alternative to a peanut based product, “Plumpynut," that is currently used by US AID and nonprofit agencies to combat starvation. Teachers are Jenny Holah, Kate Offutt, Marianne Bishara, Bill Ferzoco, Marc Rivers, and Kaitlyn Smoots.  Contact news liaison Emily Burrell at [email protected]
