South Lakes HS Students Develop Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods
South Lakes High biology students have developed Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) in their biochemistry unit as part of their project-based learning initiative. The students have been learning about macromolecules and why they are important in the human body, where and why severe acute malnutrition is a problem, and how nutrition affects the body. To help solve the malnutrition problem, the students developed a RUTF product that could be used to save lives in parts of the world where hunger is most acute. Their food is an alternative to a peanut based product, “Plumpynut," that is currently used by US AID and nonprofit agencies to combat starvation.
